FL Studio Vocoder Template – Vocal Preset
Today I present to you a cool 'Drag and Drop' vocoder template for FL Studio. I created this by using a few native plugins (Vocodex, Harmless)
I say it's drag and drop because everything is already routed and labeled for you.
Requirements:
- FL Studio 20 or higher
Native FL Studio Plugins Used:
- Image line Vocodex (included in every edition except Fruity)
- Harmless
- Fruity Parametric EQ 2
- Fruity Limiter
- Fruity Delay 3
- Fruity Reeverb 2
How To Use:
Please follow the ordered steps below on how to use this template.
- Open the FLP or zip file with FL Studio
- Drag your audio clip/s to the 'Vocal Mod' slot in the playlist
- Apply your midi data to 'Harmless' in the channel rack (you can use the piano roll or play live)
- Drag the midi pattern to the 'Vocoder Carrier Midi' slot in the playlist
- Adjust the knob titled 'Mix' in the mixer panel to your taste
- Adjust the reverb and delay volume sliders to your taste
- Experiment with the chorus, timber, unison, vib, and trem knobs in Harmless (optional)
- Export your audio
Check out the walkthrough tutorial below to get a visual demonstration of how to use this vocoder template.
Download includes:
- FLP template
- Zipped demo project file (the files used in the video above)
The cool thing about this vocoder template is that even though everything is already routed and labeled for you in FL Studio, there's still an endless amount of possibilities. You can tweak the settings in Vocodex, tweak the knobs in Harmless, even replace Harmless with another synth. These are just a few things you can do.
Reverb is a tool that is used in every Digital Audio Workstation, but not every producer knows how to use it properly. Let's dissect the uses for reverb and why it's so necessary in your tracks.

At a first glance, the Matrix for this plugin might leave you wondering what each knob or button does. If you have this program, you might have messed with each of these parameters to see what they do. However, some parameters affect each other, and we'll take a look at what is necessary.
Room Size: The depth or echo of a ‘room.' Depending on the environment you have your song in, you can change the room size to feel tight and claustrophobic or wide and spacious. This determines what atmosphere will flow through your track.
Predelay: The higher this value is, the longer it will take for the reverb to affect the sound. In addition to this, you can check the box below that will fix the delay on a set tempo. Fittingly, it's called ‘Tempo-Based Predelay.'

Diffusion: Diffusion determines the shape of the room and how the reverb echoes. The lower the diffusion value, the more interesting a sound is.
Low Cut & High Cut: These are in essence the equalization properties of how the reverb will sound when finished.
For now, we'll skip the mid/side input parameter because it doesn't matter as a starting producer.
Bass Multiplier: This parameter determines how much emphasis there is on lower frequencies in the reverb.
I would advise keeping the crossover parameter on default as it's not necessary.
Decay Time: The time that the reverb goes on for. The more seconds added, the longer the reverb goes on for before dying out. I'll have more on this in a bit.
High Damping: The amount of damping put on the higher frequencies. This acts similarly to Bass Multiplier in that it affects the reverb value on specific equalization levels.
Dry Level: Determines how much a sound will be ‘drowned out,' so to say. With low dryness levels, you can make some really interesting effects when mixed with other parameters in the matrix.

We won't focus on Early Reflection Level as it doesn't impact the end result too much. Leave it at default for now.
Wet Level: This serves as our ‘Feedback' for the entire matrix. The lower the wetness, the lower the feedback. When the wetness is high, the rest of the parameters on the matrix have more effect.
Stereo Separation: Changes how the reverb acts in panning. If you have multiple tracks and instruments with reverb, this can make a really clean mixdown.
So you can easily see that reverb helps to fill in the empty spaces of a song and make them more lively, and in some cases give it atmosphere.
Here are three really good examples of what you can accomplish with this reverb. We'll start with reverb cutoff damping.
1. First thing I do when I think of this term is immediately get out my Stage Grand Piano. (This is found under ‘PacksInstrumentsKeyboardStage_Grand) Turn off the reverb within the Direct Wave plugin (with the piano) and after setting the Piano to a master track, add in the effect ‘Fruity Reeverb 2.' The default settings in the reverb plugin should be that of the opening picture to this post. Turn the dry level down to 30%, turn the room size all the way up, crank the wetness factor to 75%, and turn the decay up to 7.5 seconds. The end result is an atmospheric chilling ambient effect that is perfect for ambient or chillout tracks. Another thing you can do with this preset is make long drawn out chords that really fill out the empty spaces of a track.
2. For my next trick, I will have a vocal be a volunteer (This is found in PacksVocals). I'm going to pick ‘What Time Is It,' because it's obnoxious, and I like that. Drag it into the playlist and assign it a master track before we start getting into the nitty gritty stuff. As you'd expect, we're going to put Fruity Reeverb 2 on said master track. Turn down the master track volume to a bearable volume before mixing. Drag the room size all the way up, as well as the dry and wet levels. Now raise the decay time to 6 seconds. After this is done, we're ready for the next step. Export the first four bars of the playlist at default tempo. Put it somewhere you'll remember. Now open up an audio clip and search for the file you just recorded and saved. When you have it, click reverse in the audio clip and it will reverse the effect. Insert it into the playlist. For now move the original vocal to measure five and insert the reversed vocal to the first measure of the playlist. Keep both audio samples on track one. As you can expect, it sounds like gibberish if you listen to the reversed vocal. But if you take off the vocal part of the sample, you get a nice build to the vocal sample. This idea is better explained by AcesToAces, who made a short joke video about 'How Make a Producer Tag.' If you watch it, you'll have a better idea about what I mean. And that's the basic fundamental of how to make a reverb trail into a vocal or note. If you want to refine it a bit, try rendering only the first syllable of the vocal, and turn down the wet level on the original sample and add reverb to the reversed vocal to make it flow into itself well.
Fruity Reverb 2 Plug In
3. I won't walk through this last one, but it can be described as the ‘wide' snare in 'I Wanna Be' by Adam Szabo & Jonny Norberg. The essence of it is you take three different snares, add wide reverb and automations to make it cut out so the reverb doesn't impact the rest of the mixing. Really, the best way is just to see for yourself. Visit ProjectsDemo_SongsAdam_Szabo_&_Jonny_Norberg_-_I_Wanna_Be.

In addition to these uses, you can experiment with the different parameters as you grow more and more familiar with the programs. If this post is missing something important, please let me know, and as always, be sure to subscribe for more content!
